Children's Defense Fund
"The mission of the Children's Defense Fund is to Leave No Child Behind and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities." Issues covered include health, education (including Head Start and child care), poverty, violence, and faith. Offers factsheets, news, actions, research, parenting tips, links, and more. Lots of useful info but the site is not overwhelming.
U.S. Administration for Children and Families (U.S. Government)
Good source for up-to-date news on children & youth issues. Topics include adoption/foster care, after-school resources, runaway and homeless youth, children's stats, government Web pages for kids, youth development, welfare reform data, child care, child abuse/neglect, etc. Many factsheets, on topics of Head Start, child welfare, domestic violence, community services programs, child support, TANF, etc. This agency includes a Children's Bureau (see below), a Child Care Bureau, a Head Start Bureau, LIHEAP info, Child Support Enforcement section, Family and Youth Services Bureau, and more.
National Center for Children and Poverty (NY)
Well-designed, info-packed site. What's new section, media resources, newsletters, state and local info, child poverty facts, child care and early ed facts, family support and welfare reform info, etc.
Child Welfare League of America
Offers legislative info, background papers, recent literature, links to advocacy agencies, conferences, legislative alerts. Of special interest are a child day care factsheet and a link to Maine's 1999 children's facts and stats on child abuse, child health, child education, child violence, and child poverty, with references.
The American ProspectL Children & Families Special Issue
Articles include: "Support for Working Families," "Decent Child Care at Decent Wages," "Reforming Welfare Reform," "Leave No Child Behind?," "It Takes a Tax Credit to Raise a Child," "Is the New Economy Family-Friendly?," articles on school vouchers, and many others, as well as links to children's advocacy and research organizations.
Zero to Three (National Center for Infants, Toddlers & Families)
"ZERO TO THREE is the nation's leading resource on the first three years of life. We are a national non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to strengthen and support families, practitioners and communities to promote the healthy development of babies and toddlers." The Web site has two tracks, one for parents and one for professionals. The parent section offers help choosing quality child care, developmental milestones, general parenting info, and a resource list.
National Parent Information Network (ERIC)
Features a virtual library with full-text resources, a collection of full-text resources for Urban/Minority Families, summaries of books, descriptions of newsletters and magazines; parent news; special initiatives; and question-answering service; electronic parenting discussion list.
Connect for Kids
Connect for Kids is "a virtual encyclopedia of information for adults who want to make their communities better places for kids." Macdonald Youth Services

          A charitable treatment and support agency in Manitoba, Canada that provides a variety of innovative programming for children, youth and families.

Radio Series: The Forgotten Fourteen Million (National Public Radio/American Radio Works)
This four-part series explores why both government and the free market are failing the most vulnerable young Americans [the 1 in 5 who are growing up poor]. Welfare Information Network: Indicators of Child Well-Being

The Future of Children (The David & Lucile Packard Foundation)
Journal published three times a year, to disseminate information on issues related to children's well-being. Site includes list of past journals with thematic topics listed.
Article: Father-Child Relationships in Welfare Reform (Welfare Information Network)
Lengthy 1998 article covering policy issues, research findings, innovative state programs, detailed bibliography, lots of links. Argument is that divorce (or non-marriage) is a cause of poverty for children. "While the 1996 poverty rate was 6 percent for children in married households, it was 31 percent in cohabiting households."

Annie E. Casey Foundation
This foundation's focus is disadvantaged children. Web site includes section on the foundation's initiatives on foster care, juvenile detention, urban kids' mental health, education reform, rebuilding communities, job. Also KIDS COUNT report, and reports on projects, grant opportunities, publications. The Casey Family Services program, which focuses on foster care and adoption, operates in Portland, ME.

The Carolina Abecedarian Project: The Importance of Quality Pre-School Education (Univ. of North Carolina)
Description of the intervention, major findings, policy implications. This was a long-term project where children from low-income families received full-time, high-quality educational intervention in a childcare setting from infancy through age 5. Afterwards, children's progress was monitored over time with follow-up studies conducted at ages 12, 15, and 21.
